'Supernatural' EP Sera Gamble: Lisa will recur, plus Dean's amulet and more

Though we just spoke to "Supernatural" showrunner Sera Gamble at Comic-Con, there's always more to say about those Winchester boys. When Zap2it caught up with her at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, we asked her the question on every fan's mind. Will we ever see Dean's amulet again?

The necklace, which Sam (Jared Padalecki) gave to Dean (Jensen Ackles) when they were kids, was a staple of Dean's wardrobe until this season, when Dean discovered that he wasn't a part of Sam's heaven and tossed it in a motel trash bin, much to our chagrin.

So we have to know -- did Sam retrieve it?

"Maybe," Gamble says coyly. "I can say that you won't be seeing the amulet any time soon, but I can't necessarily say you'll never see it again."

When Season 6 opens, Dean -- sans amulet -- has been living with Lisa Braeden (Cindy Sampson) and her son, Ben, for a year, believing that Sam is dead. "Last season when we were conceiving the idea of Dean settling down, we knew we couldn't just choose any woman from his long history of women," Gamble says. "Dean's driving force has always been his devotion to his family. He puts family above all else. We knew that no matter what his connection was to Lisa, or how wonderful she was, or great the sex was, it's about family. For Dean it's not about wanting to be with Lisa as much as it's about wanting to be part of a family unit."

If you're expecting Lisa to die a fiery death in the season premiere as a throwback to the pilot, think again. "Lisa will be recurring in the first half of the season," Sera confirms. "She's not just a one-off thing."

Gamble has taken over Eric Kripke's position as showrunner, though he remains in place as executive producer, but that's not the only shake-up in the "Supernatural" writers' room. Fan favorite Jeremy Carver is heading up the U.S. version of the BBC's beloved "Being Human," so he's no longer part of Gamble's writing staff.

"We're so happy for him," she says. "As a fan of the BBC version of the show, it's in good hands. We'll miss him on our show, but we're thrilled for him, and the door is always open, so who knows what will happen. He could be contributing. He wrote some of our best episodes. In fact, I think if you asked Eric Kripke, away from all the other writers, he'd say that 'Changing Channels' is his favorite of all of our episodes."

Kripke has said many times over the year that he'd planned a five-season arc for "Supernatural." Now that the series has moved into Season 6, we couldn't help but wonder whether this is the end.

"We know how we want the series to end," Gamble says. "Right now, we're sort of doing something that not many shows have done in the past, which is to say we've closed out our first story and we're moving on to a second chapter. We're not necessarily approaching it as our last season, but we are prepared for the eventuality. We've got an endgame, absolutely."

By the way, just because "Supernatural" has a female showrunner now, don't expect Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki to be taking their clothes off any more often. "I think the shirtlessness ratio is the same," Gamble laughs. "It's cold in Vancouver! I have to put their health first."

'Fringe' star to guest on 'Supernatural'

Fringe star Sebastian Roché has revealed that he will appear in the sixth season of Supernatural.

The actor announced via his Twitter feed that he will star in an upcoming episode of the paranormal drama.

He wrote: "Back in Vancouver, to do Supernatural! I should move here."

Roché confirmed in a previous Twitter post that he will also be reprising his Fringe role as villainous shape-shifter Thomas Jerome Newton.

Supernatural will return on September 24 to The CW. The third season of Fringe will premiere a day earlier on Fox.

The Paris-born actor broke the casting news via his Twitter feed, but offered no details on his role.

Fancast has learned exclusively that Roché will guest-star on ‘Supernatural’ in the upcoming season’s third episode, “The Third Man,” as Balthazar – an angel/soldier friend of Castiel’s.

“Remember when Cass (played by Misha Collins) was dragged back to Heaven as a prisoner? Balthazar was actually the only friend who stood up for him,” ‘Supernatural’ executive producer Sera Gamble notes. “During the Apocalypse, Balthazar went AWOL, and Cass thought he was dead. Turns out… not so much.”

So what is Balty up to, and why is he hanging among the humanfolk? Says Gamble, “He’s doing some very interesting, shady stuff we’ve never seen an angel do before.”

Roché also is set to reprise his role as shape-shifter Thomas Jerome Newton multiple times over the course of ‘Fringe’s first batch of Season 3 episodes.

‘Supernatural’ moves to Fridays at 9/8c this fall, with the new season premiering September 24.

Is anyone else a little disappointed? The way Season 5 ended, I was expecting this, but really hoping that Dean hadn't stayed around with Lisa for too long. Or at least that she would exit the show by the end of the first few episodes (notice I'm not saying she has to die...although...no, no, I know what you're thinking. I'm not THAT evil...or am I? ) Don't get me wrong, I want Dean to have a family, and I couldn't see him breaking his promise to Sam, but I just want that family to be Sam and Bobby, not Lisa and her son. Oh and Castiel of course. He's got to be there. I just really hope this doesn't mean it takes a whole half a season for Sam and Dean to get back to being Sam, Dean, and The Impala. Or for Sam to even show up. Or that Dean's traded in the Impala for a minivan. Talk about horror!

(Oh, and re: the rest of the article, I too really hope Sam retrieved Dean's necklace from the trash! In my mind he always did. I'm just waiting for the scene when he pulls it out, gives his brother the look (you know the one), and gives it back. )

Family Editor In its fifth season, Supernatural saw what was ultimately the epic climax of a five-year story arc culminating in the apocalypse and a harrowing end for the brothers Winchester. As actor Jensen Ackles told Buzzine, older brother Dean returned from Hell to begin the most normal life he’d ever had, assuming younger brother Sam was now gone. But as the Sixth season unfolds this fall, that’s not the case. Jared Padalecki offers insight into the mind of Sam on Supernatural:
Darryl Morden: Before we get to how Sam is, how are you?

Jared Padalecki: Cry me a river. I worked ’til 3;45 in Vancouver and went straight to the airport. Sort of one of those, am I drunk? No, I haven’t been drinking. Am I asleep? No, pinch me. I’m awake. But today, after a night’s sleep, I’m better.
DM: What is your perspective on Sam? We already know from Jensen that his reemergence, a year after the climactic ending of Season five, is a surprise for Dean.
JP: I’m back. I’m here at the table, so that’s good for me. They didn’t kill me, which is good. As of right now, we know that Sam is back but we don’t know how he’s back yet. We’re only right now in day two of episode three. The one [fully] with Jensen, obviously, will air as episode four, so that’s already the end of that storyline, a little bit. There, Sam and Dean are really doing their thing together — we don’t really discuss how Sam got back — but in episodes one and two, they get back into it. Sam and Dean re-converge and we find out that Sam didn’t get out of Hell just like Dean and go straight to Dean’s house [knocks on table] and go, “I’m back. What do I do?” Sam kind of went, “Dean is out of it. Dean is, right now, with a woman and kid. He’s leading a normal life, and I’m going to let him do that.” He tries to stay out of it. He tries to let Dean have the life that Sam always wanted. Sam always wanted normalcy…or so he thought, and now Dean is having that normalcy. Dean saw Sam fall into the hole. Dean knows Sam was possessed by Lucifer, so I think Sam is like, “It hurts. I love the guy, he’s my brother, but he’ll be happier without me.” So, Sam has been hunting on his own, and now they’re re-converging and we’ll see how that happens.
DM: So it’s something of a role reversal from the first season…
JP: …Which I love. Having played this brooding character who’s struggling with this, struggling with that, trying to do the right thing that always turns out wrong, all the women he’s been involved with, like the burning on the ceiling — he always feels bad about himself, and now it’s kind of fun to play, not somebody who’s heartless, but somebody’s who’s tactical first, like Dean was for so long. Somebody who’s like, “It sucks that the mother of these two kids is possessed by a demon, but we’re going to have to kill her.” And Dean goes, “Woah, weren’t you the one who was, ‘Wait, let’s talk, let’s solve things’?” They’re in the car and Dean says, “Don’t you want to talk?” And Sam says, “No, why would I want to talk?” I’m back. Why do I want to talk about hell? I’m sitting here driving with my brother, I’m breathing air, I can have a beer…what would I want to talk about? It’s truly confusing to Sam. He’s not being a jerk and going, “No, I don’t need your help. He’s just going, “Why? What’s the point?” He’s not as emotional anymore. He’s just more driven by reason. It’s a fun switch. I get to go back and watch season one and what we did, and do my own little take on it.
DM: We are seeing Sam in a new and different emotional place…
JP It’s funny — at the beginning of the show, people would ask how I wanted the show to end, and I’d say, “I want Sam and Dean to go out like Butch Cassidy and Sundance and die.” Wait, Sam has died. So has Dean. They’ve both been to Heaven. So now I think Jared has accepted that it don’t mean nothin’ to Sam. As of right now, I think Sam has accepted the fact, or at least resigned himself to the idea, that normalcy is not in the cards for them and he’s [thinking] it’s a tough lot in life, but it’s nice he gets to help people very tangibly. “This thing was going to kill you so I killed it. You’re welcome. I did something.” So I think Sam is finding solace in the comfort that he’s doing something, his legs are moving, he’s accomplishing an objective. Sam is not somebody to sit idly by and have a beer. He’s like, “What’ s next? We gotta do something.” I think it makes Sam happy to keep doing his job.

Shades of gray in the 'noir' new season of 'Supernatural'

In a recent interview with "Supernatural" executive producer and showrunner Sera Gamble, two words stood out: "family" and "noir."

There are a lot of shades of gray that we're playing with this season, Gamble said.

I spoke to Gamble Wednesday at the CBS/CW/Showtime party at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, and toward the end of our brief chat, she referenced film noir fare such as "L.A. Confidential."

It lends a different kind of gritty darkness because the heroes in those stories are not pure white hats, she noted.

Sam and Dean Winchester defeated Lucifer last season, but now that "chapter" of the story told in Seasons 1 through 5 is done, the brothers will face a new set of challenges -- some internal, some external. And as they grapple with their complicated relationship, they'll also learn more about their mother's side of the family when Season 6 gets underway on the CW Sept. 24.

As Gamble, the cast and creator Eric Kripke discussed at Comic-Con a week ago, in Season 6, Sam and Dean will be back to hunting monsters of the week, but there will be a season-long story arc as well.

On Wednesday, Gamble talked a bit about the returning guest stars we'll see in Season 6, and also about the key roles played in Season 6 by Corin Nemec and Jessica Heafey. Don't read on unless you want to see some teasers/spoilers for the new season.

Maureen Ryan: Can you talk a bit about about where things stand at the start of the season?

Sera Gamble: We have some mythology to set up in the first few episodes. We wrapped up this five-year arc, so we have some setting up do, some resetting to do. And we did this one-year jump so we have to catch up with the boys.

MR: So for a year, Dean thought Sam was dead, or locked in a cage in Hell?

SG: Yeah, [he thought] that was it. There's no way to get your brother out of the cage at the bottom of the lowest depths of the ninth circle of the worst bit of Hell.

MR: When Eric Kripke did interviews at Comic-Con, he said there was still going to be conflict between the brothers. That got the fans talking a bit, sort of like, "Really? More conflict?"

SG: There's never not been conflict between the brothers. [It's been there] from Day 1.

MR: But what's the nature of the conflict? Is it brother against brother or are they fractious while they fight a common enemy?

SG: It's about the fact that they have grown and changed, and these characters, who when we met when they were very young, have matured a tremendous amount and changed a tremendous amount. It's about them figuring out how they can be together, the way that they are now and how they can work together.

MR: Eric was talking at the Comic-Con panel about the the fact that they really began to accept each other and that's what sort of saved the world at the end of Season 5. So is there more work to be done there?

SG: I wouldn't say there's more work to be done, I would say there's a different set of circumstances for each of them. We very consciously skipped ahead, because they had been sort of nose to nose for a long time, since Season 4. What we needed to do was get some distance between them, get some personal history for each of them -- some new stuff, some new things to play for each of them. So they have new conflict, new circumstances, new stuff.

MR:You've got some new and returning characters in Season 6, right? Can you talk a little bit about that?

SG: "Mitch [Pileggi returning] is the big news, we love him.

Corin Nemec is a hunter [from the Campbell side of the family], he's a recurring character. The Campbells [Mary Winchester's family] have been hunters for a long time. Some hunters are comparatively well-adjusted -- they didn't become hunters because they watched their sister get her face ripped off in front of them when they were 10. They were born into it, sort of like Mary Campbell [Winchester] was. That's not quite so psychotic so close to the surface. We're interested in that side of the family."""

MR: And there's a female Campbell who'll be in the new season as well, right?

SG: "She's played by a Canadian actress, Jessica Heafey, and she's been fantastic so far. [Heafey plays Gwen, a character we meet in the first episode of Season 6]. And we've been bringing back monsters that are familiar, and Crowley [Mark Sheppard] is back.

Misha is a series regular of course. Castiel is a full-powered angel and Heaven is in bad shape. Misha had this dry way of describing it as [Yeltsin in the post-Soviet Union era], but I think it's more like early days Obama, trying to rally people toward a new way of thinking, which is the Sam and Dean way of thinking. He's got his hands full and still has a deep personal bond with Sam and Dean and wants to help them. And there are specific things that come up about Sam and Dean that he is very interested in, so you'll see him early in the season."

MR: What's interesting about this new part of the journey? Eric has talked about the Winchesters' path as sort of a Hero's Journey, what's new or different about where they are on that journey?

SG: "There's a lot of different kinds of Heroes' Journeys. We talked a lot about Joseph Campbell for a lot of years, we talked about Steven Spielberg movies, we talked a lot about 'The Lord of the Rings' in the [writers] room.

We [also] watch a lot of noir movies. I'm a huge noir fan, Bob Singer are huge noir fans. Eric loves this stuff too. It lends a different kind of gritty darkness because the heroes in those stories are not pure white hats.

If you think of 'L.A. Confidential,' if you think about Sam and Dean together being like a Bud White or being like a Bud White…. Bud White beats people up. He has anger management problems. He drinks too much. But he's a hero. The fact that he is moral is a problem. The other sort of hero in that story has a sort of moral relativism."

There are a lot of shades of gray that we're playing with this season, in terms of the kind of heroes we're interested in.
